I remember the day I hit the wall.  It was a cold Colorado winter night.  I had another frustrating day of teaching.

That day was filled with ineffective lessons and even more beginners quitting.  I was almost at the point of throwing in the towel and moving on from the whole guitar teaching thing.

That night, I had a strange thought.  I wondered, what if the common approach to teaching guitar to beginners was actually ineffective?

I realized that one of the biggest reasons why beginners get frustrated and quit is that they try to learn too many things at first.  I've seen beginners try to learn a little bit about a few dozen different areas of contemporary guitar playing.

You might learn some basic open chords, perhaps a few common chord progressions, some simple strumming patterns, maybe some scales, some basic melodies, a few blues licks, maybe a 12 bar blues pattern, a little music theory, a couple of classic rock or metal riffs, some open string licks, maybe a country lick or two, perhaps some fingerpicking patterns, some ridiculous chromatic finger exercises, maybe how to read music, how to read tablature, metronome exercises, some basic songs, and more.

And, you might be thrown into the deep end with barre chords before there's a slight chance you can actually play them.

I now call this Beginning Guitar Information Overload.  When this happens, you don't get a strong guitar playing foundation in place.

Once I made this discovery, I knew I had to come up with a new plan to help people.  I needed to look at all the different things that beginners tried to learn.

I had to figure out what was necessary for people to do when starting out. And I had to figure out what could wait for later.

I also had to come up with simple solutions that anyone could do.  And I had to make sure these solutions actually fixed what was wrong and ultimately helped people play guitar.

I realized that the most important thing I could do was give beginners the skills they needed to play real music as quickly as possible.  And I wanted their guitar playing to sound good from day one.

So rather than panic, I got to work.

I taught thousands of hours of lessons.  And I used my real-world experience as a school teacher to come up with a system to help beginning guitar players who were starting out or felt stuck.
